Obituary

Helen Elizabeth Johnson, 100, of Brownstown, passed away at 3:20 p.m. on Monday, May 22, 2017, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Gieseking-Claggett Funeral Home in Brownstown, with the Rev. Larry Clonch officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery in rural Brownstown. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Memorials: Liberty Christian Church in rural Brownstown or Seventh Day Adventist Church in St. Elmo. Mrs. Johnson was born on Monday, Feb. 5, 1917, in Sefton Township, the daughter of John and Sallie (Macon) Darnell. She married Paul Robert "Pete" Johnson on Nov. 6, 1938, in St. Charles, Mo.; he preceded her in death in 1992.
She had been a Brownstown correspondent for The Vandalia Leader-Union, WPMB and St. Elmo Banner, and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in St. Elmo.
She is survived by a son, Paul G. Johnson and his wife Connie of Leander, Texas; daughters, Rebecca and her husband Charles Carroll of Ramsey, and Heidi and her husband Ray Wilkosz of St. Peters, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, David M. Johnson; a daughter, Sallie Miller; four brothers; and five sisters.
