Obituary

Helen Margarite Tompkins, 103, of Smithboro, passed away at 8:38 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, at Helia Healthcare, where she had been a patient for only five weeks.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville, with Robert Chase officiating. Burial was in Maxey Cemetery. Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials: Pleasant Mound Community Center or Maxey Cemetery.
Mrs. Tompkins was born on April 15, 1911, in Tamalco Township near Pleasant Mound, the daughter of Grover Cleveland and Clara Cable Reavis. She married Claude Emmert Tompkins on Nov. 19, 1934, in Vandalia. They had 67 years together before his passing in 2002.
Helen was born and reared on the Reavis farm, attended Pleasant Mound School and graduated from Mulberry Grove High School in 1930. She worked with Claude on the farm and reared their family of five children. She was active in the Smile a While 4-H Club, Try It Craft Club, Smithboro Senior Citizens Center, United Methodist Women's Club and Pleasant Mound Methodist Church.
She is survived by sons, David "Jake" Tompkins and his wife Georgianne of Smithboro, Robert Tompkins and his wife Janice of Smithboro, and Neil Tompkins and his wife Sally of Yuba City, Calif.; daughter, Maxine and her husband Guy Stewart of Smithboro; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Maurice "Shorty" Tompkins; is the last of her generation, preceded by brothers Homer Reavis and Jack Reavis, and sisters, Mildred O'Neal, Fay Duckworth, Lena Siebert and Cleta Watson; and grandchildren, Trevor and Trent.
