Jack L. Scott, 74, of Lazy S Farm in rural Brownstown, passed away at 9:07 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at his home, with his wife and kids at his side.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Brownstown High School, with Dr. Roy Yarbrough and Revs. Tom Bryant and John O'Dell officiating. Burial will be in Griffith Cemetery in rural Brownstown. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday and one hour before services on Tuesday, both in the high school gym. Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Haley Chapel, Brownstown Community School District Foundation, for Oral Cancer, Kassy Fulk Memorial Scholarship, Fayette County Health Department Hospice or donor's choice. Mr. Scott was born on June 10, 1940, the son of Herbert and Aribet Yarbrough Scott. He married Bettie J. Dowell on Aug. 19, 1961, at Haley Chapel in rural Bluff City.
He was the manager of Yarbrough Enterprises, a lifetime farmer, an IHSA basketball official for more than 40 year, an insurance agent for County Companies and a past president of the Southern Illinois U-Haul Co. He was a member of Haley Chapel Church of rural Bluff City, Vandalia Moose Lodge No. 1447, Masonic Temperance Lodge No. 16 A.F. & A.M., Gideon's International, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and a founding member of the South Central Basketball Officials Association.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Troy Scott and his wife Dee of Brownstown, and David Scott and his wife Shelley of Greenfield; grandsons, Daton, Dylan, Coleman and his fiancée Ashton, and Hoyten; granddaughter, Morgan; great-granddaughter, Brynlee; stepgrandson, Layton; stepgranddaughters, Kassidy and Kallie; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Scott; and a sister, Betty Yarbrough Richards.
