James A. Bratcher, 85, of Hillsboro, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, at Hillsboro.
Cremation rites will be accorded and graveside services will be held at noon on Wednesday at GreenHill Cemetery in VanBurensburg, with Dr. Ben Foxworth officiating and military rites accorded. Friends and family may gather at the cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Memorials: , www.st.jude.org. Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Bratcher was born on June 30, 1930, in Detroit, Mich., the son of Alfred James and Maggie Isabel (Simmons) Bratcher. He married Ardeth A. Walker on July 10, 1951, in Vandalia; they celebrated 64 years of marriage.
He was employed for 43 years at Mueller Co. in Decatur, where he was a tool and dye maker, and he was also a part-time barber. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving four years aboard the USS Gilbert Island, USS Bennington and USS Lake Champlain aircraft carriers. After his retirement, he enjoyed sharing the sights and ports he had visited during his naval career.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in rural Vandalia.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Denise and her husband Rick Stombaugh of Morton, Vida and her husband Harold Camp of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Donna Bratcher and Paul of Orangeburg, S.C.; grandchildren, Eliaz McMillan and his wife Harmony, Cade Stombaugh and his wife Jess, Kyle Bresnan and his wife Tina, Aaron Stombaugh and his wife Kelly, and Emily Bresnan; and great-grandchildren, Dez and Jude Stombaugh.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Bratcher.
