James W. Bray, 81, of Vandalia, died at 5:48 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Lutheran Care Center in Altamont.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia, with the Revs. Peter Kolb and Jerry Bagwell officiating. Burial will be in Dieterich Cemetery in Dieterich. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the church. Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Bray was born on Sept. 24, 1931, in Neoga, the son of Ellis E. and Thelma Phillips Bray. He married Marlene Mascher on Aug. 21, 1955.
He was an electronic technician for the Federal Aviation Administration for 33 years, and he served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95, both in Vandalia.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Robert Bray and his wife Vicky of Altamont, Frederick Bray and his wife Ruth of Effingham, and Dennis Bray and his wife Kathy of St. Peter; grandchildren, JR Bray and his fiancé Kiley Willison of Eugene, Ore., Erin and her husband Josh Moffit of San Diego, Calif., Holly Bray of Effingham, Kristen and her husband Jason Park of Chicago, and Kyle Bray and Rachel Bray of St Peter; great-grandchildren, Thaddaeus Moffit and Camilla Park; and sisters, Neva and her husband David Casstevens of Olney, and Louise Price of Waverly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Henry Bray and Raymond Bray; and half brothers, Noel Bray, Ross Bray and Richard Bray.
