John David Greer, 82, of Vandalia, passed away at 8:40 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at his home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Kurt Simon officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church. Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Greer was born on Sept. 12, 1931, in Vandalia, the son of Dr. Miller and Elizabeth McMackin Greer. He married Sara Elizabeth "Betty" Belden on April 10, 1954, in St. Elmo.
He was the owner/operator of Greer Hardware in Vandalia, a Mutual of Omaha Insurance salesman and independent owner/operator of Transcontinental Trucking, and he served in the Army. He was a member of and elder at First Presbyterian Church of Vandalia; member of Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia, Vandalia Country and Golf Club, and NRA; and a retired member of the Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid golfer, hunter, and skeet and trap shooter.
He is survived by his wife; sons, John Douglas Greer with Patricia Adermann, and David Michael Greer; sister, Susan Hudnut of Indianapolis, Ind.; and grandchildren, Lauren Adermann of St. Louis, Mo., and Christopher John Walkup of Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Julie Ann Greer.
