John L. O'Dell, 88, of Salem, passed away on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, at Community Health Professionals Hospice Center in Van Wert, Ohio, surrounded by his family.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Salem, with Terri Haas officiating. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery in Salem. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem. Memorials: Trinity United Methodist Church or .
Mr. O'Dell was born on Nov. 16, 1929, in Centralia, the son of Ezra Lee and Mable Kathryn (Phipps) O'Dell. He married Noreta Daughtery on Feb. 17, 1951, in Centralia; she preceded him in death.
John attended Centralia Community High School where he graduated in 1947. During high school, he played the trumpet in the concert and marching band. After high school, John worked for Huggins Grocery Store and Kas Potato Chip, then for Hollywood Brands Candy Co. He graduated from McKendree College in 1967 and Dayton Theological Seminary in 1971, and became an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church in 1973. He served as a minister in the United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.
He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Miller of Grover Hill, Ohio, and Cindy Nash and husband Keith of Palestine, Ill.; sons, John O'Dell Jr. and wife Penny of Lima, Ohio, and Timothy O'Dell and wife Beth of Vincennes, Ind.; grandchildren, Lisa Speith and husband Christopher of Van Wert, Ohio, Diana Tomlinson and husband John of Van Wert, Ohio, Melissa Fishburn and husband Steve of Indianapolis, Ind., Blake Nash of Palestine, Ill., and Stephanie Wukusick and husband Tommy of Lima, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Taylor Tomlinson, Zachary Tomlinson, Kenadie Speith, Haley Speith, Parker Speith, Mason Speith and Hank Wukusick; and a great-great-grandson, Carter Bochard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a son-in-law, Rick Miller.
