John Lloyd Carter, 83, of Shobonier, passed away at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at Lutheran Care Center in Altamont.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with the Rev. Robert Keen officiating and military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia and VFW Post 9770 of Brownstown. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday at Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia. Memorials: Altamont Lutheran Care Center Activity Department. Mr. Carter was born on May 8, 1933, in rural Pana, the son of Bonnie and Mabel (Smith) Carter. He married Maggie Dean Dubiel on Nov. 3, 1957, at Ramsey Christian Church.
John served in the U.S. Army, worked for VanTran Industries and Crane Packing, and was a self-employed farmer.
He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Margie Carter; son, John Carter and his wife Jamie of New Albany, Miss.; daughters, Marsha and her husband Rick Sasse of Vandalia, Linda and her husband Dennis Speerly of Millington, and Rae Lynn and her husband Mitch Koehler of Brownstown; grandchildren, Michael Sasse and his wife Tammy of Brownstown, Matthew Sasse and his wife Sarah of Vandalia, Daniel Speerly and his wife Sarah of Millington, Andrew Speerly of Millinton, Stephanie and her husband John Stout of Sycamore, Zachary Koehler and his fiancé Madison Howard of Brownstown, and Amanda Koehler of Brownstown; great-grandchildren, Corie and her husband Cody Smith of Altamont, Hunter, Shelby and Adrianna Sasse of Brownstown, Logan Sasse of Vandalia, Kaylanii, Kassandra and Carter Speerly of Millington, and Bayley, Blake and Bryce Stout of Sycamore; great-great-granddaugher, Grace Kathleen Smith of Altamont; brother, Joe Carter of Springfield; sisters, Donna VanUytven of Oconee, Iris and her husband Lindell Martie of Ramsey, and Carolyn and her husband Bob Reynolds of Springfield; brothers-in-law, Clifford Dubiel and his wife Sharon of Kingman, Ariz., and Allen Dubiel of Alexander, Ark.; sisters-in-law, Norma Gable of Shobonier, Rose Wheeler of Somonauk, Nancy and her husband Jack Pickel of Bryant, Ark., and Carol and her husband Jim Long of Somonauk; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Frank and Estella Dubiel; son, David Lloyd Carter; daughter, Lisa Jo Carter; brothers and sisters-in-law, Shirley and her husband Joe Gremba, Wilma Carter, John VanUytven, Mary Ann and her husband Arthury Lloyd, Donna and her husband Clifford Robinson, Betty and her husband Albert Seidenstucker, Frank Dubiel and his wife Phyllis, Orville "Pete" Gable and Eugene Wheeler.
