Obituary

Kayla D. Houston, 22, of Effingham, formerly of Vandalia, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2014.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with the Rev. Louis Frick officiating. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of services at First United Methodist Church. Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Miss Houston was born on Sept. 3, 1991, in Breese, the daughter of Bill F. and Amy B. Helm Houston.
She was affiliated with First United Methodist Church in Vandalia, and loved the outdoors, hunting and kayaking. She was a track and basketball standout at Vandalia Community High School, where she was a member of the two-time, back-to-back state champion 1,600-meter relay team and holds school records in the 4x100-, 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams.
She is survived by her parents and brother, Cameron Houston, all of Vandalia; maternal grandparents, Barb and her husband Jim Behrends of Brownstown, and Rick Helm and his wife Saundra of Vandalia; paternal grandmother, Faye Moreland of Vandalia; and maternal great-grandfather, Russell Hewitt of Vandalia;
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Mick Moreland; maternal great-grandparents, Juanita Hewitt, and Gerald and Helen Helm; and paternal great-grandmother, Almedia Haney.
