Laverna Lydia Ammann, 94, of Highland, passed away at 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital West in Chesterfield, Mo.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, with the Rev. Christopher W. Hill of the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland officiating. Burial will be in Highland City Cemetery in Highland. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday and from 8 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday, both at the funeral home. Mrs. Ammann was born on Aug. 1, 1919, in Carlyle, the daughter of Fred W. and Louisa Steffen Wiese. She married Lester John Ammann on Aug. 7, 1937, in St. Charles, Mo.; he died on April 7, 2008.
Laverna was born in Carlyle and lived with her Aunt Louise after her mother's death. At age 13, she moved to Jamestown, where she helped the Emil Foehner family and then the Tony Gnaedinger family with household chores. She moved to Highland and worked at Florence's Beauty Shop, Tschannen 5&10 cent store (for 10 years), Ziegler Jewelry Store and Super Value Bakery (for 10 years). She enjoyed dancing, playing bingo, hosting card parties, gardening and raising flowers.
She is survived by a son, Dennis L. Ammann and his wife Karen of Ballwin, Mo.; daughter, Diane K. Chappel of Vandalia; grandchildren, Julie E. and her husband Patrick Gribbon of Wildwood, Mo., Jennifer M. and her husband Stephen Berry of Chesterfield, Mo., Susan J. and her husband Christoper DePaul of Wildwood, Mo., Christopher J. Chappel of Collinsville, Sarah L. Ammann and her fiancé William J. Price of St. Louis, Mo., W. Ryan Chappel and his wife Kimberley of Vacaville, Calif., Melissa D. Chappel and her fiancé Ken Lounsbury of Winfield, and Megan K. and her husband Kyle Miller of Aurora; great-grandchildren, Kyle P. Gribbon, Sophie M. Berry, Jack S. Berry, William D. Gribbon, Ethan C. DePaul, Charlotte J. DePaul, Jack W. Chappel and Dylan H. Chappel; and a sister, Arlene A. Gustafson of Higland.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Lester, Harold and Elvin Wiese; and sisters, Gladys A. Hug and Eleanor L. Bircher.
