Lawrence R. "Larry" Waddell, 98, of Vandalia, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Unity Baptist Church, Sixth Street location, Vandalia, with the Rev. Robert Weaver officiating. Burial with military rites was in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation was held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church, with Masonic rites at 9:30 a.m. Memorials: Temperance Lodge No. 16 A.F. & A.M. in Vandalia, Shriners' Hospitals for Children or Unity Baptist Church. Mr. Waddell was born on Jan. 12, 1920, in Thebes, the son of James Edward and Effie Gertrude (Jordan) Waddell. He married Kathleen Frances Reeter on Oct. 29, 1939, in St. Charles, Mo.; she passed away on Oct. 28, 2015.
He was a retired electrician maintenance foreman at Vandalia Correctional Center and a World War II Navy veteran. He was also formerly employed at Waddell Electric in St. Elmo; NY Central Railroad in East St. Louis and Mt. Carmel; and Milwaukee Railroad in Milwaukee, Wis.
Larry was a member of First Baptist Church in Vandalia; Masonic Lodge No. 769 and Temperance Lodge No. 16 A.F. & A.M. for more than 74 years; Scottish Rite Bodies and Ainad Temple Shrine of East St. Louis for more than 50 years; VFW Post 3862 of Vandalia; Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia; Local 702 of West Frankfort for more than 50 years; and former member of AFSCME.
He is survived by a son, Michael Waddell and Jane of Vandalia; daughters, Sandra Grobengieser, and Rosalie Bone and Bob, both of Vandalia, and Vicki Frankum and Rod of Galveston, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; and sister, Effie Pforr and Raymond of Mattoon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; four brothers; and three sisters; and son-in-law, Gordon Grobengieser.
