Maxine A. Gumbel, 93, of Vandalia, passed away at 6:09 p.m. on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with the Rev. Kurt Simon officiating. Memorials: Fayette County Cancer Fund or donor's choice. Mrs. Gumbel was born on Aug. 23, 1923, in Wayne City, the daughter of Jeff C. and Gladys N. (Taylor) Henson. She married Ralph L. Gumbel on Nov. 4, 1972, in Flora; he passed away on Oct. 28, 2001.
Maxine owned and operated several restaurants in Wayne County and Clay County until her retirement. She was a proud member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary.
She is survived by her son, Ronald Marshel and his wife Candy of Vandalia; grandchildren, Amand and her husband John Strohschein of Mt. Vernon, Colleen and her husband Bob Taylor of Atlanta, Ga., and Shawn Jeffries of Bedford, Texas; great-grandchildren, Jack Strohschein, Reed Strohschein, Alex Taylor and Lauren Taylor; brothers, John Henson of Manchester, Mo., and Bill Henson of Union, Mo.; and sister, Joan Richardson of Nashville, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Vernon Jeffries; and sisters, Leona Ice, Selma Larson, Wilma Turner and Linda Henson.
