Mercedes M. McCoppin, 87, of Champaign, formerly of Vandalia, passed away at 4:14 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Piatt County Nursing Home in Monticello.
Mrs. McCoppin wished to be cremated and have graveside services, which will be held at a later date. Memorials: Eastern Illinois Foodbank, 2405 N. Shore Drive, Urbana, Ill. 61802.
She was born on May 2, 1927, in Ivesdale, a daughter of Charles Francis and Margaret Gallivan Maley. She married Clyde V. Manny on Nov. 8, 1947, in Ivesdale; he passed away on Nov. 8, 1990. She married Everett McCoppin on Aug. 17, 1996, in Vandalia; he passed away on January 30, 2007.
Mercedes graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1968 and taught elementary school in Monticello. Although she lived most of her life in Ivesdale, she was a Vandalia resident from 1992-96. She enjoyed painting and drawing, reading, traveling and spoiling her grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and an excellent storyteller.
Survivors include her son, Fred Manny and his wife Laurie of Bakersfield, Calif.; daughter, Candy Zeman of Champaign; and daughter-in-law Barbara Manny of Deerfield; grandchildren, John Zeman and his wife Katie Lenzini of Bloomington, Brian Manny of Morton Grove, Grant Manny of Chicago, and Elizabeth and her husband Elliot Kolkovich of Akron, Ohio; great-grandson, Teddy Kolkovich of Akron, Ohio; sisters, Joan and her husband Harold Stoerger of Monticello, and Loretta Manning of Springfield; sister-in-law, Eleanor McCoppin of Normal; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by her son, Victor Manny; son-in-law, Paul Zeman; two sisters, Grace Teela and Marie Harshbarger; nine brothers-in-law; and seven sisters-in-law.
