Merl R. "Dutch" Haynes, 94, of Vandalia, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, in his home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Terry Sapp officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials: Ramsey Christian Church in Ramsey. Online condolences may be expressed at www.millerfh.net.
Mr. Haynes was born on April 26, 1920, in rural Vandalia, the son of James Anderson and Maud Myrtle Sumption Haynes. He married Betty Marie Shepard on Jan. 1, 1950, in Vandalia.
Dutch retired after 47 years as a foreman in combustion engineering. He served in the Army during World War III, in the Fifth Army-338th Division and 85th Custer's Division, and was First Scout in Italy for 269 days. He was affiliated with Ramsey Christian Church and was a member of Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Diane and her husband Doug Arnold of Odin, Jeanette and her husband Mark Benoodt of O'Fallon, Mo., Debra and her husband Tim Glover of Silex, Mo., and Mary Etta and her husband Ronnie of Vandalia; brother, Cecil Haynes and his wife Joann of Clearwater, Fla.; grandchildren, Bobby, Jenny, Stacy, Shelly, Ryan, Chris, Casey and Dustin; great-grandchildren, Vinny, Sophie, Gianna, Frankie, Eli, Kylie, Brendan, Scotty, Morgan, Tasha and Dylann.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
