Myron Dean Pontious, 86, of St. Peter, passed away at 2:17 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at his residence.
Services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Pagel Funeral Home in St. Peter. Burial was in Old Loogootee Cemetery in rural St. Peter. Visitation was held at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Saturday. Memorials: Macedonia Church in Effingham of Fayette County 4-H.
Mr. Pontious was born on May 18, 1927, in St. Peter, the son of Homer V. and Iza R. Smithson Pontious. He married Della E. Brooks on July 27, 1952, in Bible Grove.
He was a retired farmer, and he served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War as a sergeant. He was a member of Macedonia Christian Church, a lifetime member of the Pontious Family Association and served several times as commander of St. Peter American Legion Post No. 380. He was also an active member of the Farina LaGrove School Board for many years.
He is survived by his wife; son, Brent Pontious and his wife Deborah of rural St. Peter; daughter, Mitzi Schwertfeger of Plymouth, Wis., and Michele and her husband Keith Perkins of Effingham; sister-in-law, Ruth Pontious of Salem; grandchildren, Alex Pontious and his wife Stacey of Columbia, Ill., Adam Pontious and his wife July of Lebanon, Mo., Ali Pontious of St. Peter, Josh Perkins of Effingham, Kimberly Perkins of Effingham, and Lee Schwab of Des Moines, Iowa; and great-grandchildren, Aiden Pontious and Owen Pontious.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Aubrey Pontious; sister, Enid Gurtner; and son-in-law, Carl Schwertfeger.
