Robert Eugene Nickels, 81, of St. Elmo, a loving father and grandfather, passed away on Thursday morning, Nov. 9, 2017, at his home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Kull Funeral Home in St. Elmo, with the Rev. Pee Wee Denton officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in St. Elmo. Mr. Nickels was born on Feb. 7, 1936, in Otego Township, Fayette County, the son of Charles Clifford and Mary Catherine Strauch Nickels. He was raised with his brothers, Kenneth, Charles and Gary. He married Thelma Lou Ledbetter on June 27, 1953, in the home of the Rev. Charles Simpkins; she preceded him in death on Jan. 27, 2005.
Robert was employed as a machinist and a tool and die maker for different companies, including Fedders USA in Effingham, Crane Packing in Vandalia and, finally, at Sim Products in Beecher City, retiring in 1998.
He is survived by a son, David E. Nickels of St. Elmo; Penny and her husband David Harrison of St. Elmo, Barbara and her husband Kelly Smith of Green River, Wyo., and Diana Nickels of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Gary Allen Nickels of Brownstown; sisters-in-law, Loretta Nickels and Sharon Harris, both of Brownstown; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and special companion, Decker, at home.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Charles and Kenneth Nickels; and a granddaughter, Nicole Jane Nickels.
