Rosemary ""Rosie"" Gerkin, 85, of Washington, Ill., formerly of Vandalia, passed away on Friday, Dec. 23, 2016, at Washington.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Unity Baptist Church, Sixth Street location, Vandalia, with the Rev. Robert Weaver officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the church. Memorials: Unity Baptist Church. Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Gerkin was born on Feb. 11, 1931, in Vandalia, the daughter of John Alexander and Rosa Fern (Carson) Merriman. She married Dennis Edward Gerkin Sr. on June 3, 1948, in Corinth, Miss.; he passed away on Jan. 11, 2010.
She was the retired owner and operator of Rosie's shoes in Vandalia, and a member of Unity Baptist Church, Vandalia Country and Golf Club, Women of the Moose and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority-organized and narrated "Smurf Hollow" in Vandalia.
She is survived by a son, Jim Gerkin and his wife Rosalie of Germantown; daughter-in-law, Tricia Gerkin of Vandalia; brothers, the Rev. Jim Merriman of Saraland, Ala., and Dr. Tim Merriman and his wife Lisa of Captain Cook, Hawaii; grandchildren, Lori Pattillo, Alicia King, Brandi Romero, Dennis Gerkin III, Ashley Smith and Alex Gerkin; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Dennis Gerkin Jr.; daughter, Marianne Gerkin; and sister, Lois Greeson.
