Samuel Joseph Simon, 90, of Vandalia, died on Friday, March 29, 2013, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at First United Methodist Church in Assumption. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Assumption, with full military rites accorded by Assumption VFW Tacusah Post 6577. Visitation will be held from noon until time of services on Friday. Mr. Simon was born on Jan. 21, 1923, in Mt. Sterling, the son of Michael J. and Mary M. Grover Simon. He married Marilyn Feld in Mt. Sterling.
He graduated from Mt. Sterling High School and served his country in the Army Air Corps. He taught history at Assumption High School for 26 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Assumption and Assumption VFW Tacusah Post 6577.
He is survived by his wife; son, Michael Simon and his wife Janet of Eugene, Ore., daughter, Rebecca DeClerck of Vandalia; grandchildren, Abby Bayles, Andy DeClerck, Tim DeClerck and Molly DeClerck Keppler; and great-grandchildren, Morgan Cripe, Ryan Bayles and Ethan Bayles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
