Saundra K. Motycka-Helm, 74, of Vandalia, passed away early Saturday, April 8, 2017, at home, surrounded by her family.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, at Bethel Baptist Church in rural Vandalia, with the Revs. Dr. Ben Foxworth and Joe Lawson officiating. Friends may gather at the church at 10 a.m. Burial will be held at a later date in Panama Union Cemetery in Panama, Ill. Memorials: Bethel Baptist Church or Lighthouse Pregnancy Center, both of Vandalia. Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Helm was born on Feb. 10, 1943, in Panama, Ill., the daughter of Raymond Lloyd and Violet Lenore (Ash) Henderson. She married Richard W. "Rick" Helm on May 14, 1981.
Saundra dedicated more than three decades of her life to the health care field. She received the Woman of Distinction Award in the field of health from Soroptimist International of Vandalia in 1993; as she received this award, her daughter, Dee, was delivering her first grandchild. Saundra also received an Abe Award from the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce in 2008 for her community service, instructing health occupations at the Okaw Area Vocational Center and Fayette County Health Department. She served on several boards and committees, including Fayette County Mental Health, Fayette County Habitat for Humanity and Teen Aid. Saundra volunteered with teaching first aid, CPR and AIDS awareness; participated in Summer Lunches for Kids Program, Divorce Workshop Recovery program, Partners in Reading, Meals on Wheels, March of Dimes, Salvation Army, Girl Scouts and Christmas toys for underprivileged children. Saundra was instrumental in the establishment of Lighthouse Pregnancy Center, serving as vice president of the Lighthouse Board, and was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church, serving on fellowship committees and as a Sunday and Bible school teacher, greeter and nursery worker.
She is survived by her husband; daughter, Dee Motycka-Hill and her husband Roger of Vandalia; granddaughters, Emily Hill and Grace Hill, both of Vandalia; godsons, Andy Schwarm and his wife Monica of Chicago, and Alex Schwarm and his wife Samantha of Glen Ridge, N.J.; and sister, Charlene Henderson of Springfield. Other children include Amy and her husband Bill Houston of Vandalia, Mark Helm of Vandalia and Joshua Helm of Missouri. She is also survived by grandchildren, Cameron W. Sarah, Eva, Cameron J. Vanessa, Destiny, Hannah and Jake; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Kayla.
