Mr. Beckman was born on July 5, 1948, in Vandalia, the son of Elmer and Maribelle (Leidner) Beckman.
Steve graduated from Vandalia Community High School, received a diploma and license in cosmetology, and also received a degree in Art from Illinois State University. He taught cosmetology in Charleston, S.C., before returning to Vandalia to open his own salon. He was a watercolor painter who took numerous classes to learn more about his craft. He moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in May 2006, and had been a resident of Hallettsville, Texas, since Jan. 1, 2015.
He loved living in the country near Hallettsville, where he planted a big vegetable garden and shared his bounty with family and friends. His flower gardens were filled with salvia, petunias, iris and lilies. Steve's wit and sense of fun were evident in whatever he did or wherever he went.
Steve was an active member of Mossy Grove Methodist Church. He made homemade bread for the Communion services. His cinnamon rolls and meatloaf always disappeared quickly at potluck suppers.
He is survived by his mom Maribelle Beckman Alender and stepfather Raymond Alender; brothers, Charles "Gene" Beckman and his wife Nona, and Jeff Beckman and his wife Mona, both of Vandalia; stepbrothers, Mike Alender and his wife Tina of Lovington, and Jeff Alender and his wife Vicky of Atlanta, Ga., daughter, Stephanie and her husband Jim Gurr of Palm Harbor, Fla.; life partner, Charles Strode of Hallettsville, Texas; grandchildren, Jillian Gurr, Haden Gurr, Addie Miller and Chase Miller; and great-grandchildren, Averie Miller and Easton Wright; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his dad; and a daughter, Stacie Miller.
