Virginia E. "Ginny" Mabry, 85, of Vandalia, passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials: Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department. Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.millerfh.net.
Mrs. Mabry was born on Dec. 1, 1930, in San Augustine, Texas, the daughter of Drennon C. and Julia Inez (Nations) Stringer. She married John R. "Johnny Bob" Mabry on Dec. 10, 1949, in Vandalia; he passed away on Oct. 20, 2012.
Virginia and her husband were the former owners/operators of The Village Shoppe and Mobil gas station, and were the originators of Jay's Barn Restaurant, all in Vandalia. She was also associated with The Hub Department Store in Vandalia. Ginny was a former member of Soroptimist International of Vandalia, serving two years as its president; was a charter member of the Vandalia Main Street Board of Directors; helped organize Operation OUTING, Friends of Evans Public Library and its book fair, The Little Gallery and Expresso Art Club; and served on the executive board of Vandalia's 175th Celebration.
She is survived by a son, Brad Mabry of Vandalia; daughter, Rebecca K. Biellier of Vandalia; brothers, Dr. W.E. "Bill" Stringer and his wife Jeanne of Vandalia, and Dr. W.H. "Win" Stringer and his wife Christine of The Villages, Fla.; sister, Nell Laswell of San Antonio, Texas; daughter-in-law, Christi Mabry of St. Charles, Ill.; grandchildren, Cassie and her husband Terry Beesley of Vandalia, Blake Biellier of Austin, Texas, Andrea and her husband Andy Deliman of Geneva, and Jonathan Mabry and his wife Lindsay of Elburn; and great-grandchildren, Tucker, Jonah, Andrew, Austin and Ashton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Curtis Mabry, in July 2015; and a brother, Dr. D.D. "Durwood" Stringer.
