Wilbur R. Bartels, 79, of Shumway, passed away at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Pagel Funeral Home in Edgewood, with one hour viewing prior to services. Mark White will be officiating. Burial will be in Mason Cemetery in Mason, with military graveside rites by Edgewood American Legion Post No. 1168. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, at Pagel Funeral Home in Edgewood. Wilbur was born on Feb. 7, 1936, in Mason, the son of Arthur H. and Bertha D. Strackeljohn Bartels. He married Virginia Mae Hutton on Jan. 3, 1959, at First Christian Church in Stewardson.
He served in the Army for six years. He was a member of the Edgewood American Legion Post# 1168. He enjoyed farming, hunting and being with friends and family, especially with his grandchildren.
Wilbur leaves behind his wife, Virginia Bartels of Shumway; a son, Roy Bartels (wife Kathy) of Stewardson; two daughters, Karen and her husband Kevin Anderso of Ottawa, and Rose Bartels of Jewett, Illinois; brother, Walter Bartels and his wife Judy of Mason; five grandchildren, Roy Bartels, Jeremiah Bartels, Joseph Galloway, Melissa Anderson and Laura Anderson; and two great- grandchildren, Dreyden Bartels and McKenzi Bartels.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sarah Bartels; four brothers, Clarence, Carl, Monroe and Cecil Bartels; and four sisters, Nora Ashby, Lola Mitchell, Anna Kincaid and Bernice Gressel.
