Willet W. Schaefer, 92, of Centralia, formerly of Augsburg, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2015, at his home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia, with the Revs. Mark Girardin and Perry Schefelker officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia, with military rites accorded by American Legion Post 446 and VFW Post 2055. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia. Memorials: SSM Hospice, Trinity Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran School in Centralia. Mr. Schaefer was born on Jan. 7, 1923, the son of William Henry and Josephine W. Maske Schaefer. He married Walda Jank on Feb. 12, 1944, in Stamford, Texas; she preceded him in death after 56 years of marriage on March 23, 2000.
He served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator/gunner, stationed near Foggia, Italy, during World War II. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking, and he worked on electrical wiring in many houses. He was an avid Detroit Tigers fan. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia, and he loved his church and church family very much. He was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfathers, brother and uncle. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by four children, Robert Lyndon Schaefer and his wife Martha of Holiday Shores, Cathleen and her husband Julian Bright of Alhambra, Daniel Schaefer and his wife Linda of Centralia, and Judith and her husband John Stack of Centralia; grandchildren, Matthew Schaefer and his wife Amanda of Holiday Shores, Lt. Col. Derek Bright of the Air Force and his wife Tracy of Aurora, Colo., Andrew Bright and special friend Heather Smith of Alhambra, Kyle Schaefer and his wife Tammy of Centralia, Melissa and her husband Kevin Scheetz of Centralia, Jason Stack and his wife Michele of St. Louis, Mo., Jennifer and her husband Tim Kincaid of Quincy, Justen Stack of Centralia and Jacquelyn Stack of Centralia; great-grandchildren, Luke Bright, Avery Bright, Logan Bright, Kelsie Schaefer, Kristyn Schaefer, Kaleb Schaefer, Zachary Holt and his wife Rachel, Ashley Holt, Riley Scheetz, Reese Scheetz, Connor Stack, Whitney Stack and Raylee Kincaid; great-great-granddaughter, Olivia Holt; daughter-in-law, Nancy Schaefer of Centralia; brother-in-law, Erich Jank of Sullivan, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Cordula Lange of St. Louis, Mo., and Jean Jank of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; nephew, Robert Jank of Indiana; nieces, Marlys and her husband Mike Berry of Jackson, Mo., and Donna and her husband Tom Coughlin of St. Louis, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Ronald Allen Schaefer; sisters, Agnes Schaefer and Glenna Myer; an infant brother; brothers-in-law, Oliver Lange, Edgar Meyer and Carl Jank; and sister-in-law, Marjorie Jank.
