William D. 'Beeb' Staff, 82, Carbondale
William D. "Beeb" Staff, 82, of Carbondale, formerly of Vandalia, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2013, at his home.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, at First United Methodist Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Dr. Philip Nordstrom, the Rev. John Nordstrom and the Rev. Dr. Roger Grimmett officiating. Burial was in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation was held from 9-10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at First United Methodist Church. Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia in charge of arrangements. Mr. Staff was born on Sept. 29, 1930, in Bluff City, the son of Floyd F. and Edna Funk Staff. He married his high school sweetheart, Billye Brooks, on December 13, 1952, in Vandalia.
He was a graduate of Vandalia High School, Class of 1949, and he attended Greenville College, graduating in 1952. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served in the Army at Camp Breckinridge, Ky., and in Korea.
Following discharge from the Army in 1954, he began a teaching and coaching career in Altamont, moving to Ottawa, in 1958, where he continued this career, retiring in 1988. He also was a graduate of Rhema Bible College/Kingsway Theological Seminary, becoming an ordained minister in 1988, and served as an assistant pastor at First United Methodist Church Ottawa. After moving to Carbondale, he became a member of Christ Community Church in Murphysboro.
As an athlete, Beeb was inducted into the Vandalia High School Hall of Fame and Greenville College Hall of Fame, and as a coach, into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was a member of Illinois Education Association and National Education Association. As a volunteer, he was an active sponsor of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a Bible study leader at Vandalia Correctional Center and a chaplain at Fayette County Hospital, and served as a visiting preacher at many churches.
He is survived by: wife, Billye; son, Michael "Mike" Brooks Staff and his wife Kathy; daughter, Minna Sue Staff; grandchildren: Andrew Staff and his wife Amber; and Colleen and her husband Zach Kemp; great-grandchildren, Rosie and William Staff, and Eloise Kemp, all of Carbondale; brother: Jim Staff and his wife Joyce of Vandalia; sister: Melody and her husband Phil Freeman of Vandalia; stepbrother: Bill Hunter and his wife Mary Ruth of Edwardsville; stepbrother-in-law, David Fleming of Litchfield; sisters-in-law, Pat Staff of Springfield, Iris and her husband Bill Rademacher of Vandalia, and Betty and her husband Don Darling of Carbondale; several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Coral and Opal Brooks; brother, Floyd Gene Staff; stepsister, Felma Nell Fleming; and stepmother, Edythe (Hunter) Staff.
