William James "Bill" Phillips, 62, of rural Vandalia, passed away at 6:59 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, where he had been a patient for four days.
Graveside services at Bethlehem Cemetery, with full military honors by Mulberry Grove American Legion Post 1180, will be announced next week. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Mulberry Grove. Memorials: The family.
Mr. Phillips was born on March 1, 1955, in Doniphan, Mo., the son of William Jasper and Stella Virginia (Armes) Phillips.
Bill grew up in the Troy-Edwardsville area, graduating from Edwardsville High School in 1975. Bill answered his country's call by joining the U.S. Army on Aug. 25, 1975, in St. Louis, Mo., rising to the rank of E-5 SP 5, serving overseas in Germany for two years, 11 months and eight days as a crewman in Armor. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 26, 1979, at Ft. Riley, Kan. Bill lived in Bartlesville, Okla., from 1975-93, working for Phillips 66 Petroleum (Research Center). He moved to the farm north of Vandalia in 1997 and worked for Orgill of Vandalia until he was disabled.
He is survived by his daughters, Virginia R. Hughbanks of Ainsworth, Neb., and Randie R. (Kevin) Nordyke of rural Vandalia; grandchildren, Angel Cook, Rheanne Phillips and Tami Cook; mother, Stella Virginia Phillips of rural Vandalia; and sisters, Ruth (Charles) Wiegand of Moro and Pat Krueger of Troy.
