William "Bill" Sachan, 85, of Carbondale, formerly of Fayette County, passed away on Monday evening, Aug. 6, 2018.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Shobonier, with Pastor Gray and Rev. Hoehleir officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the church. Mr. Sachan was born on May 30, 1933, in Vandalia, the son of Chris and Rose (Ehlert) Sachan.
William graduated from Vandalia High School in 1952. He was called to duty by the U.S. Army in August 1954 and was stationed in Austria. After his honorable discharge in March 1955, he returned to the family farm, where he resided until he retired in 2008.
William retired after 30 years on the Fayette County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, and he also served on the Fayette County Hospital District Board of Directors. He was a progressive farmer.
He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served as secretary for many years. He was also on Board of Directors of Wilberton Mutual Insurance Co. in St. Peter.
He was a past commander of American Legion District 23 for one year, and after leaving the military, he joined American Legion Post No. 380, where he was a life member.
He is survived by a sister, Virginia Sachan-Smith of Carbondale; a brother, James Sachan of Herrin; nephews, Webb Smith of Carbondale, Kris (Ellen) Smith of Palatine and Timothy Smith of Carbondale; and great-nephews, Sam Smith of Summerville, Mass., Adam Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Andrew Smith of Durango, Colo.
