Elden W. Torbeck, 87, of Champaign, formerly of Fayette County, died at 1:06 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, in Urbana.
Services were held on Friday at St. John Lutheran Church in Champaign, with private burial. Memorials: St. John Lutheran Church of Champaign or St. John's Lutheran Church-Ash Grove of Onarga.
Mr. Torbeck was born on July 22, 1926, in rural Shobonier, the son of William M. and Pearlnelda (Lehde) Torbeck. He married Dorothy Forbes of Vandalia in 1950.
He grew up on the family farm, using horses until the mid-1940s. He served in the Army and attained the rank of master sergeant while serving on the island of Guam in the South Pacific. After his discharge from the service, he began his lifelong career in the heavy construction industry. After moving to Champaign in 1963, Elden worked through three heavy construction equipment dealers to supply much of the heavy equipment used in the building of Interstates 57 and 74 in Champaign, Ford, Iroquois and Vermilion counties. He earned the distinction of being named one of Caterpillar's Top Ten Salesmen in 1969 and retired from the construction equipment business in 1988. He was well-known as a businessman of integrity, honesty and dependability.
Elden loved the Lord Jesus Christ and served Him faithfully throughout his life. He grew up attending Immanuel Lutheran Church and School in Augsburg. His legacy of faith includes service to Faith Lutheran Church of Mt. Vernon, St. John Lutheran Church in Champaign and Trinity Lutheran Church in Urbana. He was also instrumental in helping found and establish Friendship Lutheran Church of Joy in Champaign. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Urbana and served on the Urbana Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
He is survived by his wife; sons Randy Torbeck and his wife Anne of Champaign and David Torbeck and his wife Carole of Bloomington; grandchildren,
Barbara and her husband the Rev. Kevin Wendorf of Onarga, Sarah Torbeck and Pavel Abramov of
Bloomington, Ind., Carl Torbeck of Gilman, Douglas Torbeck and his wife Sara of Palatine, and Katie Torbeck her fiancée Will Taylor of Champaign; and a sister, Arleen Sasse ofAltamont.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
