Joseph Earl Wheatley, 87, Springfield, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017 at University of Louisville Hospital.
Born on Oct. 23, 1930 in Washington County, he was a lifelong farmer in Washington County, worked at Ford Motor Company in Louisville as an assemblyman for 17 years and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Francis Earl and Marie Smith Wheatley; a brother, Albert Wheatley; and five sisters, Corine Barr, Dottie Mattingly, Frankie Carrico, Virginia Smith, and Sara Rita Mudd.
Survivors include: his wife, Mary Theresa Luckett Wheatley; two sons, Kevin Wheatley of Lawrenceburg and Mark Wheatley of Springfield; five daughters, Pam "Steve" Hill, Mary Jo "Gene" Nalley, and Fran "Scott" Thompson, all of Bardstown, Angela "Ricky" Elder of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Marsha "Wayne" Mattingly of Celina, Texas; one brother, John R. Wheatley of Springfield; five sisters, Christine Blandford, Charlotte "Helem" Lewis, and Nancy Elder, all of Louisville, Lucy "Kenny" Hamilton, and Marilyn "Jimmy Howard" Fenwick all of Springfield; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fredericktown with Rev. Matthew Hardesty, Rev. Terry Bradshaw, and Rev. Jack Caldwell officiating. Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery with military honors rendered by Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, and again from 7-9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home, Springfield, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Pallbearers are grandchildren: Ryan Hill, Richard Elder, Aaron Thompson, Joseph Thompson, Trent Mattingly, Evan Mattingly, Chase Mattingly, and Anna Wheatley.
Honorary pallbearers are granddaughters: Stephanie Hornback, Allison Stone, and Erica Forst.
