Jones, June E. - Columbus
June E. Jones March 7, 1931- May 26, 2015 Columbus, GA- This mother, wife, Mema, and Judge, died May 26, 2015 at Columbus Hospice House after a long battle with "chronic c…", as she called her ailments. Known for her assertiveness, leadership, and hard work, June Etta Douthit Jones was born March 7, 1931, in Detroit, MI to Hugh and Virginia Broughton Douthit. June was the third of six children. A U.S. Army veteran, June will be buried with full military honors. Her funeral will be Saturday, May 30th; 3:00pm at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd., Columbus, GA. Visitation will follow afterwards at the gravesite. Rev. Bobby Robinson of LaGrange, GA., will officiate. A graduate of Denby High School in Detroit, June was inducted into the Women's Army Corps in 1949, serving as a cryptologist at Ft. Gordon, GA. There she met SFC Wilbur E. Jones, who swept June off her feet. In just three weeks, they fell in love, married, and then spent over 54 years together. After their military service, June and Wilbur moved to LaGrange, GA., where, for sixteen years, they lived, loved, worked, and raised a family; daughters, Bobbie and Becky. There June gained a variety of work experiences, preparing her for God's ultimate plan, yet to be revealed. When a new job brought Wilbur to Columbus in 1966, June and daughters followed. Subsequent jobs led June to Muscogee County Juvenile Court. At the court, June found her calling, working with at-risk youth. Her appointment as an Associate Judge of Muscogee County Juvenile Court by former Gov. Joe Frank Harris was one of her proudest moments. As of 2014, children whom June had helped, now grown, continued to seek her out to thank her for making a critical difference in their lives. June also served the community as a member of Hilton Terrace Baptist Church, the Professional Business Women's Association, and the Altrusa Club. June was instrumental in helping bring to Columbus, Teen Challenge, a ministry that offers Christ-centered, faith-based solutions to youth, adults, and families struggling with life-controlling problems, such as substance abuse. June is pre-deceased by her parents, husband, daughter, Becky, sister, Jen White (Ralph), and brother, Ron Douthit. Survivors are daughter, Barbara "Bobbi: J. Smith (Bill), grandchildren: Andi Barnes (Andrew), Kippi Schneller (Joe), Drew Smith (Shannan), and ten great grandchildren: Ryan, Tyler, Kyle, Jonathan, Joshua, Benjamin, William, Matthew, Chandler, and Lindy, brothers, Richard Douthit (Sonja), Rev.
