Crocker, Mary Grace - Columbus  
Mary Grace Crocker December 28, 1932- April 22, 2015 Columbus, Georgia- Our loving mother, Mary Grace Crocker, joined our loving father on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, surrounded by family and friends. There will be a celebration of her life for friends and family on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at the home of her loving sister, Alice Spurlin, 1524 Tom Buk Tu Lane Columbus, GA 31904 between 2:00 - 4:00pm. Born December 28th, 1932, in Vandiver, AL, Mary Grace resided in Columbus, GA most of her life, graduating from Baker High School and retiring from Communicorp. She enjoyed square dancing and bridge. In her later years she became an avid tennis player. Mary Grace was preceded in passing by her parents, Leonard and Grace Perry; her brother, Sammy Perry; and her husband James William "Bill" Crocker, Jr. She is survived by her brothers, Leonard Perry Jr., Frank Perry; sister, Alice Spurlin; along with her children, Susie Reynolds, Dianna Phillips, Renee Matthews, James W. Crocker III; grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Mary Grace's animals were an important part of her life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Paws Humane or to Serenity Hospice Care of Columbus whose caring support helped with this transition of life.

Crowder, Gladys Vernell - Columbus  
Gladys Vernell Crowder August 14, 1939- April 19, 2015 Columbus, Georgia- Gladys O'Neal Crowder, age 75, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away at her home on Sunday, April 19, 2015. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, April 23, 2015, 11:00am at Beallwood Baptist Church with Reverend Billy Duncan officiating. Committal is to follow via an escort, in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. Friends are invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock until seven o'clock the evening of Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Mrs. Crowder, daughter of the late Johnnie and Mattie May Thomas O'Neal, was born August 14, 1939 in Langdale, Alabama. She was a member of Bellwood Baptist Church. Mrs. Crowder loved her family as well as her church family. She married Amos Crowder in 1955 and was married for 52 years until his passing. Mrs. Crowder was a homemaker and spent her time caring for their six children together. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Amos Crowder; daughter, Wanda Sue McDevitt; son, Marvin Crowder; one brother; and five sisters. Mrs. Crowder is survived by her children, Jean O'Neal, Kathy Willis (Wayne), Marie Lawhorn (James), Kenneth Crowder, Sandra Moore (Randy), Linda Parrish; one brother; two sisters; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Currie, Dr. John L. - Asheville  
Dr. John L. Currie October 14, 1942- April 22, 2015 Asheville, NC- Surrounded by his five children, Dr. John L. Currie passed into the arms of his Lord on April 22, 2015 at St. Joseph's in Asheville, NC after a long illness. Dr. Currie was born October 14, 1942, the fifth child of Wilbur Hoke Currie and Elizabeth Louisa Woltz Currie of Carthage NC.  He was baptized as an infant and was a member of the Carthage Presbyterian Church.  He graduated from Christ School in Arden, NC in 1960.  While at Christ School Dr. Currie was head prefect as a senior, earned letters in football, basketball and baseball and was named as the most outstanding senior athlete in 1960. He was awarded the Morehead Scholarship and matriculated to the University of North Carolina where he pledged Beta Theta Pi.  At Carolina he completed his undergraduate studies in 1963 and his MD in 1967.  After his internship and residency at the University of Pennsylvania, he served in the United States Air Force for two years before returning to join Chapel Hill OB-GYN. Later he completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Duke, and then joined the medical faculty at UNC-CH.  In 1987 Dr. Currie became Chief of the Division of GYN-Oncology at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, and later was named Chairman of the Department of OB-GYN at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical School in New Hampshire.  He served academic and surgical appointments at the University of Connecticut, Vanderbilt and finished his medical career by establishing a GYN-Oncology practice at the John B. Amos Cancer Center in Columbus, GA. In 2001 Dr. Currie graduated from Vermont Law School and was entered into the state of New Hampshire Bar. Dr. Currie was married twice, first on June 8, 1967 to Madeline Dell Gray in Charlotte.   Their children John Angus Lauchlin and Lauren Elizabeth were born in 1971 and 1974, respectively. On March 17, 1985 Dr. Currie married Terre Pauline Holden in Chapel Hill.  Their children Caroline Rebecca-McIver, Katharine Holden and Wilbur Douglas Woltz were born in 1986, 1987 and 1989, respectively. Dr. Currie lived a life full of family, friends, service, music, art, carpentry, Montreat, skiing and travel.  From an early age and throughout his life he found great joy in music. Among his many bands were The Harmony Grits, Piney Mountain Boys and Jim McCoy Trio in Chapel Hill, the Fogey Mountain Boys in New Hampshire, Tarnished Brass in Montreat and Berry Pickers in Asheville.  For several years he was organist at Lebanon (NH) United Methodist Church.  In Montreat he wrote and direct four summer musicals beginning with "Little Stranger How Do You Do" in 1961 and culminating with "Rock, Roll & Pray, Montreat" in 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Margaret Willcox Currie, his Aunt Mary Lynn Currie and eldest sister Mary Elizabeth Currie Shoenfelt. He survived by his son and daughter in law John (Gus) and Mary Lawrence Currie of Manhattan, KS, daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and Will Uppington of Hillsborough, CA, daughter Caroline Currie and fiancé Suzanne Edman of Palo Alto, CA, daughter KC Currie and fiancé Lena Charron of Jamaica Plain, MA, and son Wilbur Currie and girlfriend Taylor Heist of Montreat, NC, grandchildren Jack, Virginia and Mary-Dell Currie and Lizzie, Lauchlin and Charlie Uppington, his sisters Katharine Currie Neil, Ann Currie McCullough, Dr. Ruth Douglas Currie and Lynn Currie Wallace, and brothers Rev. Thomas Willcox Currie and Wilbur Hoke Currie, Jr as well as legions of beloved nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. The family wishes to thank the wonderful nurses and care givers of the St. Joseph's ICU and his niece Lynn Gilliland for their faithful stewardship of Dr. Currie in his last days on earth.  A Celebration of Life will be held at Gaither Chapel in Montreat on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 3:00 PM with a reception to follow.  On Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM there will be a graveside service at Cross Hill Cemetery in Carthage. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wilbur Hoke Currie Craft Center Endowment Fund of the Mountain Retreat Association, PO Box 969, Montreat, NC 28757.  Condolences may be made at www.AshevilleMortuaryServices.com

Doughtie, Betty Bowden - Columbus  
Betty Bowden Doughtie January 13, 1925 - April 20, 2015 Columbus, GA- Betty Bowden Doughtie, 90 of Columbus, Georgia passed away on Monday, April 20, 2015 at her home surrounded by her loving family. A Graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 11:00 AM in Riverdale Cemetery, Columbus, Georgia. Mrs. Doughtie was born January 13, 1925 at Midland, Georgia, daughter of Morris Malachi Bowden and Ruth Wood Bowden. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1944 and later from Truman Smith Business School. Mrs. Doughtie was employed and retired from The Woodruff Brown Company. She taught the MYF, a youth group at Midland United Methodist Church. Mrs. Doughtie is presently a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Good News Sunday School class. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mrs. Doughtie is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Rebecca Bowden Graddy. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Mr. Charles P. Doughtie Jr.; two daughters, Donna R. Doughtie and Lauren (Brian) Bush; son, Charles P. "Chuck" Doughtie III; granddaughter, Kelli (Jerremy) Crutcher and great-granddaughters, Chloe Crutcher and Layla Crutcher; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
