Phenix City, AL- Richard Thomas Atkins, 69, of Phenix City, AL passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Columbus Hospice House.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 pm EST, Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Vance Memorial Chapel with Dr. James C. Elder, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Atkins was born September 21, 1943 in Norfolk, VA to his mother Carrie Turner Atkins Dudley and the late George Richard Atkins. He was retired as a construction superintendent. Mr. Atkins was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church where he was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, part of the Amen Choir, served as chairman of the Building and Grounds, served on the Family Activity Center Committee and participated in many other church activities. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his fathers George Richard Atkins and Warren G. Dudley.
Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife of 49 and a half years, Dorothy McElvey Atkins of Phenix City, AL; sons, Mark Atkins and wife Storie of Midland, GA and Alan Atkins and wife Jinjer of Crawford, AL; mother, Carrie Turner Atkins Dudley of Valley, AL; sisters, Jennan Atkins Phillips and husband Rick of Hoover, AL, Pamela Dudley Barr and husband Bruce of Salem, AL, and Janice Dudley Sigler and husband Pat of Crawford, AL; brothers, Emmett Atkins and wife Shirlene of Nashville, TN and George Atkins and wife Julie of Valley, AL; grandchildren, Sophia Atkins, Reed Gibbs, J.B. Gibbs and Emily Kidd and husband Will; great-grandchild, Bailee Grace Kidd; mother-in-law, Dorothy Simons McElvey; uncle, Douglas Turner wife Myrna; aunts, Ruth Atkins Triplett, Virginia Hopson and Lillian Cumbaa; sister-in-law, Kay McElvey Winberg husband Paul and numerous other family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Lakewood Baptist Church or the Columbus Hospice House.
