The hours spent in Jim's classes are among my fondest high school memories, and I'm sure, if I had been able to see then what I see now, my appreciation for him would have been even greater. I certainly hope that he knew what a change he made in the lives of his students as well as how much we came to appreciate that dry sense of humor, which he often used to critique the teenage mind. Time may pass, but the light Jim Fletcher cast still shines.

Mr. Fletcher has an enormous impact on me when I was a student at Hardaway. He once told me that he wanted to be a writer at one point and had some success at it, but realized he didn't have the passion for it and so became a teacher. All of his students were so lucky that he chose the path that he did. He inspired me to embrace learning and self-reflection, and I know he did the same for many others. At that age, in high school, your outside influences can have a profound impact on you - you have so many conflicting feelings and impressions and tendencies. I have no doubt that James Fletcher's presence helped me to find the very best path for myself. I was very sad to hear this news.

Like all of his former students, I was absolutely inspired by Jim Fletcher. His humor, his insight, and his knowledge were unmatched, and any student that didn't have him as a teacher truly missed out.
After having him in both American Lit and Humanities, I tended to compare every teacher I got to him. Frankly, no one else could cut it. I went on to get my Bachelor's Degree in Humanities, and even though we only talked a couple of times since graduation, I still think about him often.

Jim Fletcher:
Time will pass. . . Will YOU?
Truly one of the great teachers that I have had. He made me read things that expanded my horizons and challenged me to think critically. As I work on my PHD, I can hardly thank him enough for inspiring me.

I only first met Jim Fletcher a couple of years ago, as a student at Hardaway. But his influence on me was and remains great. I can’t express the extent of it. It’s there, I feel it, but I can’t fully say it. Words are always so shallow compared to what we want them to do. Still, I think he’d want me to try.
When I first met Mr. Fletcher, he appeared to be an elitist and a cynic, perhaps a misanthropist. He intimidated me. But I couldn’t have been more wrong. The more time I spent with him, the more I was struck by his modesty, his compassion for his students, and his courage to keep looking for the “words in the Word”—as his man Karl Barth put it—the faith to will truth despite its continued elusiveness, in a world seemingly indifferent to our presence.
Mr. Fletcher taught me the importance of meaning, the necessity of it, of trying to find it, however limited each of our attempts. With him, through him, I realized that there’s something to our thoughts—that, however mysterious their origins, I should pay attention to them, argue with them, and project them into the language of ideas. But, most of all, he taught me that those ideas belong not only to us but to others. The examined life isn’t worth living, he might say, unless lived for others. It’s meant to be shared.
The courage to create, the courage to give. These are his gifts to me. I miss him.

I got to know James in the amazing Jordan Band, 1959-1961, where he was a wonderful bandsman and percussion section leader. James was a deep thinker with a serious grasp of life issues that mattered. James was a mental giant and, in my opinion, could have easily displaced literary greats like Ernest Hemingway as a world class author. Instead, he chose to share his amazing abilities with students, an investment possessing the greatest return. He was extraordinary and passionate about objectives he considered important, and one of the greatest personalities experienced in my life.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of a truly inspirational teacher. He inspired us to see the world in a different light--one with beauty in architecture, literature, music, and art. God has indeed brought home a special angel that saw the beauty throughout the world and inspired so many countless lives. His legacy will endure. HHS Class 1994

The realization that outside forces influence a son or daughter weighs heavy on a parent(s). How lucky are we that Jim Fletcher was a positive force in the life of our son. Mr. Fletcher instilled in him (Hardaway ’06) a love of learning, passion for poetry and prose, and a terror of “troglodyte-ism”. Our son is one of many who is a living legacy to the life of Jim Fletcher.

Much like many others, I am saddened by the loss of Mr. Fletcher and the world is much less without him. As a teacher, he had such a huge impact on his students. He leaves a legacy of lifelong learners created in his classroom.

I can honestly say that being part of the first class of International Baccalaureate students to attend Hardaway High was a blessing in itself for the opportunities it held for our futures. But being able to meet and attend a class Mr. Fletcher taught, was a true gift to all of his students.
A very unique individual, Mr. Fletcher will forever be remembered to several hundred students he has inspired over his many years of teaching. I personally still have not had an educator be as truthful and moving as he was.
Thank you Mr. Fletcher.. Every time I think about our classes I cant help but laugh at all the funny moments shared. God Bless you, Mrs.Fletcher (another wonderful teacher), and all of your family.

I had the great pleasure of attending Mr. Fletcher's Humanities and Lit. class at Hardaway the year he made state English teacher of the year-92. I remember him preparing for the class! I majored in Art History because of his classes. He loved teaching and it showed. He taught us to think for our selves and always ask why. I also had the pleasure of having his lovely wife for english class at Hardaway and I send her my condolences, thoughts and prayers. -Monica Daniels Truluck- Lawrenceville, GA

Mr. Fletcher was a great and honest teacher. He would tell us how things were in life as he made us ready for the real world through his book choices and lectures of life. He will be missed and loved by many. I am happy to have the honor to have been in his classes and know him as the funny, sarcastic, and intelliegent man that he was. God Bless Mr. Fletcher and his family.

If a person is lucky during their educational career they will have a teacher who makes a lasting impact on every student who walked into their classroom. James Fletcher was that teacher for me. I can remember sitting in his AP English class at Hardaway High School being engaged in every lesson, and hoping my response in a discussion would not earn the recommendation of taking up "underwater basketweaving" in college. Not every teacher could have that kind of banter with his students, but he was one of the best. His unique blend of wit and sarcastic humor made his class one of my favorties (Plus, I got to watch "A Clockwork Orange" the last week of school). I can only hope that when I retire as a teacher I will have students who remember me as fondly as I remember him.

I graduated from Hardaway in 1991. He was an amazing teacher. He introduced me to Dante and Stravinsky. I will never forget the inspiration he was to me. He will be greatly missed. As will his "gomp" stick.

I graduated from Jordan (class of 1961) with Jim (we called him James back then) and remember what an asset he was to the band. Who could ever forget his eloquent tribute to Mr. Barr that was published in the Ledger when Mr. Barr passed away. James lived a life that mattered. I am thankful to have known him.

I was fortunate to have Mr. Fletcher twice at HHS for English and Humanities. My fondest and funniest memory is our debate on whether or not Robert Frost's poem Stopping by Woods was about Santa Claus. I loved his dry sense of humor. He inspired me and was quite possibly my favorite teacher of all time. God Bless him and his family. He was a gift to all who knew him! C/O '89

I am seldom moved as I have been by this news, as Mr. Fletcher gave me some of my fondest classroom memories of high school. I think of him and his Humanities course often, and also of our senior-year trip to New York City. I got to visit Mr. Fletcher a couple of times at Hardaway over the years since my graduation -- but not nearly enough -- and I enjoyed catching up with him. I knew Mr. Fletcher to be a good man, as interesting a fellow as you could ever meet, and a Hardaway High School institution.
Adieu, Mr. Fletcher -- we will miss you.
