Phenix City, Alabama- Joe Messer, age 82, resident of Phenix City, AL. died on Friday, August 24, 2012 at his residence. Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Monday, August 27, 2012, 1 p.m. with Rev. Ronald White and Rev. Joe Strickland officiating. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, August 26, 2012 from 5-7 p.m.
Mr. Messer, son of the late Davis Reuben Messer and Izora Hornsby Messer, was born December 15, 1929 in Goodwater, AL. He retired as Owner, Messer's Transmission with over 50 years of faithful service. Mr. Messer was a member for more than 54 years at Oakview Church of God, Phenix City, AL.
He was preceded in death by two sons, David Messer and Freddy Messer. Mr. Messer is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ivie Messer of Phenix City, AL; four daughters, Brenda Dill and her husband Robert of Jamestown, NC, Roberta Hudson of Columbus, Jean Motos of Phenix City, AL, and June Greer and her husband Jerry of Salem, AL; four sons, Richard Messer and his wife Judy of McDonough, GA, Robert Messer and his wife Debbie of Phenix City, AL, Frankie Messer and his wife Sharm of Phenix City, AL, and Phillip Messer of Stone Mountain, GA; two sisters, Stella Davis and Linda West, both of Opelika, AL; two brothers, Leon Messer and his wife Mary Ann of Seale, AL and Norman Messer of Opelika, AL; 21 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to ALA CARE Hospice, 2400 John Hawkins Parkway, Birmingham, AL 35244.
