SFC (Ret) Prathon

Columbus, GA- Sergeant First Class Prathon Thornton of Columbus passed away on Sunday at his home. He was 89 years of age and resided at 2814 - 8th Street.
A native of Lumpkin, GA, Sgt. Thornton was the son of the late Jeff and Marjorie Martin Thornton. He was a member of Zion Watch Baptist Church in Lumpkin and was a 30 year Veteran of the U. S. Army. He served in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was also retired from the U. S. Postal Service. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was preceded in death by his son, Prathon, Jr., and two brothers, J. T. and George W. Thornton.
Survivors include: two daughters, Dian Sheffield, Atlanta GA and Natasha Phillips (Danny), Columbus, GA; five grandchildren, Alaisha Thornton, Devin Phillips, Prathon Thornton III, Weston and Brian Wills; four great grandchild; one great great grandchild; four sisters, Margaret T. Williams, Columbus GA, Carrie Morgan, Jamaica, NY; Annie L. Queen, Trenton, NJ; and Sallie Wilborn, Philadelphia, PA; two brothers, Willie E. Thornton, Houston, TX and Johnnie Thornton, Lumpkin, GA; an aunt, Clara Henderson, Pittsburgh, PA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The Homegoing Celebration for Sgt. Thornton will be Friday, November 15, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Greater Shady Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Marcus Gibson officiating The Reverend Ben Stanley will deliver the eulogy. The interment will follow with Full Military Honors in the Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, 2 til 6:00 pm at the funeral home. The cortege will depart from the residence at 10:15 am the day of the service. Arrangements entrusted to the staff of Progressive Funeral Home, Inc. "A Touch of Dignity for Those Who Care."
