Columbus, GA- Staff Sergeant Retired R. L. Breland of Columbus passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home. He was 78 years of age and resided at 4923 Mapelwood Drive.
Son of the late Jack Sr. and Lula Farland Breland, Sgt. Breland was born in Poplarville, MS. He was a decorated U. S. Army Veteran who served during WWII, the Vietnam Conflict and the Korean Conflict. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star who retired after 21 years of dedicated service to his country. He was also retired from Civil Services, Ft. Benning, GA following 16 years as a audio/video technician at Bldg. 4.
Survivors include: his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Susan Johnson Breland; two children, Ronald (Dorothy) Breland and Sharon (Barry) Richardson; a grandchild, Monica Breland; four brothers, J. L. Breland (Novell), Thomas Breland (Mattie), Al C. Breland (Johnnye) and Jack Breland, Jr., two sisters, Florine Breland and Jacqueline Breland; three half siblings, Van McGown, Miles Sims and Diane Dean; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The Homegoing Celebration for Sgt. Breland will be Monday, November 18, 2013 at 12:30 pm at St. James Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Ralph Huling officiating. The interment will follow with Full Military Honors in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. The visitation is today, 1 til 3:00 pm at the funeral home. The cortege will depart from the residence today at 12:00 pm. Arrangements entrusted to the staff of Progressive Funeral Home, Inc. "A Touch of Dignity For Those Who Care."
