Columbus, GA- Robert Franklin George, 80, of Fortson, GA passed away at St. Francis Hospital, November 11, 2013. Robert was born March 11, 1933 to Aubrey W. and Johnnie Alice Emfinger George in Bibb City GA.
Visitation was Tuesday November 12, 2013 5:00 - 7:00 PM in the Wynnton Room of Striffler - Hamby, 4071 Macon RD, Columbus, GA. A private committal service will be graveside 1:00 PM Wednesday November 13, 2013 at Parkhill Cemetery followed by a 3:00 PM Celebration of Life at Evangel Temple Assembly of God, 5350 Veterans Parkway.
Mr. George is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sara Crews George; two daughters, Sandra and her husband Steve Ivey of Nashville, TN, and Angie and her husband Bruce Bacon of Fortson GA; one sister, Joyce Donahue of Columbus, GA; four grandchildren, Ellen and her husband Greg Cobb of Nashville, TN, Beth Anne and husband Captain David Kennedy of Columbus, GA, and Simon and Sid Ivey of Nashville, TN; and one great-grandchild, Lucas Kennedy of Columbus, GA.
Mr. George was born in the Columbus Area and attended local schools until joining the US Navy in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged he continued his employment with Lummus Cotton Gin Co., where he held many positions until being elected President and CEO of Lummus Industries, and finally Chairman of the Board and CEO until he retired in 1993.
Traveling extensively with Lummus, Robert was known all over the world with his favorite destination being The People's Republic of China. Mr. George was appointed by the President as a member of the Atlanta District Export Council and participated in the briefing of Vice President Quail's trip to Africa in 1992.
Mr. George was very well educated and attended many Colleges and Universities including Beacon University where he was awarded an Honorable DD degree in 2000 and he served as President of Beacon College and Graduate School from March 1998 to March 2000.
As a lecturer on international trade, Mr. George has been a guest speaker at universities in the UK, Africa, China and numerous US Civic clubs. Mr. George remained active in the executive management role of private companies, MCE&T International, Inc. and George and Associates International, LLC, in addition to consultant services for a number of clients including companies interested in relationships with China. He was also active in recruiting foreign faculty for Chinese universities and implementing study abroad programs for the much loved Chinese students.
Mr. George served on the Board of Directors of several organizations in Columbus and throughout the state of Georgia: Kennett Dairy, District Export Council, United Way, Rotary Club of Columbus, Beacon University, Barnett Bank of Southwest GA, Columbus GA Chamber of Commerce; Columbus Regional Medical Foundation. In addition he served on international boards including: MCE&T International Inc., James Mackie & Sons, Belfast, Norther Ireland; Hubie Lummus Cotton Machinery LTD. Tianmen, China; Lasco, LTD, Luska, Zambia; and GVDC, LTD, Gwembie Valley, Zambia.
Robert will be remembered for his strong faith and deep love for his family and friends.
