PINE MOUNTAIN, GA- Sidney Fine Kaminsky, Born August 13, 1942 in Savannah, GA, son of the late Abraham and Sonia Fine Kaminsky, died on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 in Pine Mountain, GA from a sudden heart attack. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Judith Gerson Kaminsky of Columbus, GA.
Sid Earned a Master's Degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia in 1964. He was employed at WUOT FM Radio in Knoxville, TN. The Kaminsky's then moved back to Columbus in 1967 where he was active in the community for almost 60 years. In 1968, he was the owner of Bi State Broadcasting Company, which included Bill Board Reporting Country Music Station, WPNX that earned nine gold and platinum record award plaques from the record industry. In 1974 he was co-owner/creator of WFXE-Foxy 105, where he also began his long illustrious career as Jazz Show Host, "Sid the K" which subsequently aired statewide on Peach State Public Radio as "Jazz at The Peach". Sid was integral in the founding of the Columbus Jazz Society in 1987, and served as its president for two years.
Sid also served on the following local boards as a member or officer. They include, Shearith Israel Synagogue, Columbus Hospice, Columbus Toasmasters, Charter Member of The Columbus Museum, Board of Directors of the Columbus Battered Women's Association and he served on the Public Relation Committee of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. In 1978, Sid was employed as the Vice President of Marketing for Goodwill Industries.
The Kaminskys moved to Simi Valley, CA in 1996 to be close to their two daughters. Sid continued his jazz show on public radio station, KCLU in Thousand Oaks, CA and became a realtor partner with his wife and youngest daughter until 2004 when the Kaminskys returned to Pine Mountain, GA. Sid then became the Vice President of Leisure Travel and Convention Sales for the Columbus Visitors Bureau until 2014.
Retirement did not agree with Sid. So, last summer Stars and Strikes of Columbus created a job position especially for him called "Ambassador of First Impressions" where he happily greeted customers until his death.
Sid is survived by his daughter and son in law, Jana and Jeff Hoyt, his daughter and son in law, Beth and Todd Heindel and two grandchildren, Jake and Sofie Heindel.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Shearith Israel Synagogue, 6727 River Road, Columbus, GA, 31904, with Rabbi Brian Glusman officiating according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, GA. Interment will follow in Riverdale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Sid's memory to Shearith Israel Synagogue, The Columbus Jazz Society or to Columbus Hospice.

So sad to hear about Sid's passing. I remember his terrific jazz radio show and a very interesting presentation he made about jazz at the Kiwanis Club back in the 1990's. He saw some of the greats of jazz play in New York City when he was young. He will be missed.

I worked with Sid at the GSAE welcome events and he just lit up the room with his smile, handshake and genuine warmth to want to meet and laugh we all he met. He will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
