Columbus, GA- Reverend Willie James Nelson of Columbus passed Wednesday at the Columbus Regional Medical Center. He was 78 years of age and resided at 3728 Califon Drive.
The son of Theodore, Sr. and Mattie Hill Nelson, Rev. Nelson was born in Ft. Valley, GA on October 21, 1934. He was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church where he served as President of the Brotherhood, with Deacon's Ministry, and the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. He was retired from Martin Army Community Hospital, Ft. Benning following over 20 years as a chef, and served as pastor of Sweet Home Baptist Church in Box Spring, GA for 18 years. He also served as pastor of Lizzie Chapel Baptist Church in Byron, GA for 3 years. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of the Korean War and was a Prince Hall Mason.
He was preceded in death by three siblings, Arthur Nelson, Theodore Nelson, Jr. and Mattie Ruth Turner.
Surviving his departure with cherished memories, include his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Alma Carter Nelson, a son, Dr. James A. Nelson, Sr. (Linda); two daughters, Brenda Nelson Jones and Linda Littleton (Vince); four grandchildren, Lee A. Jones, James A. Nelson, Jr., Xavier A. Jones and Tonya L. Nelson; two great grandchildren, Serenity Moore and Leandre A. Jones; three sisters, Mary Stanford, Avaline Stanford and Ellen Darby; loving in-laws, a host of nieces, nephews cousins, other relatives and friends.
The Homegoing Celebration for Reverend Nelson will be held Today, 12 Noon at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church with interment in the National Cemetery at Ft. Mitchell, AL. with Military Honors conducted. Reverend J. C. Harris will officiate. The cortege will depart from the residence at 11:30 today. Arrangements entrusted to the staff of Progressive Funeral Home, Inc. " A Touch of Dignity for Those Who Care."
