Columbus, GA- Mr. Robert P. Stevenson, Jr., SGM (Retired) of Columbus passed away Saturday at St. Francis Hospital. He was 75 years of age and resided 3807 Montrose Drive.
A native of Winnsboro, S.C. and the son of the late Robert, Sr. and Mamie Ellison Stevenson, Mr. Stevenson was born on March 13, 1938. He was a U. S. Army Veteran, retiring after 29 years following two tours at Vietnam. He was also retired from the U. S. Postal Service with 11 years as a mail carrier. He was a member and Commander of the DAV Chapter #56, and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Mr. Stevenson was a wonderful and loving caregiver to his wife who preceded him in death, Mrs. Mary Walker Stevenson. He was also preceded in death by a great grandchild, Chandler Rivers.
Survivors include: his children, Wayne Birch (Geraldine), Kathy Birch, Sheila Simmons and Kelvin L. Stevenson (LaShundra); six grandchildren, one great grandchild; four brothers, Joseph Stevenson (Ruth), James Stevenson (Martha), Kenneth B. Stevenson and Eddie L. Stevenson; five sisters, Bessie Woodard (Curtis), Vivian Powe, Mary Jackson (Alfred), Mamie Ricks (Willie) and Willie F. Stevenson; loving in-laws, Willie B. King, Louise Chester (Willie) and Hattie Boglin; god children, Teresa Person (Byron) and Charles Mallard (Patricia); a host of other relatives and friends.
The Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Stevenson will be held Friday, 11:00 am at the Progressive Chapel with interment in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, 1 til 6:00 pm at the funeral home. The cortege will depart from the residence at 10:30 the morning of the service. Arrangements entrusted to the staff of Progressive Funeral Home, Inc. "A Touch of Dignity for Those Who Care."
