Phenix City, AL- Don E. "Hong Kong" Owens, 68, of Phenix City, AL, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014, in Columbus, GA.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm EST, on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Vance Memorial Chapel with Rev. John Burnette officiating. Interment will be held at Lakeview Memory Gardens and the family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 pm EST at the funeral home in Phenix City.
Don was born on August 30, 1945, in Columbus, GA, the son of the late Sam Fred Owens and Annie Jane Higdon Owens. "Hong Kong" was a graduate of Jordan Vocational High School class of 1966. He was a family man, an avid fisherman and Auburn fan that enjoyed life and enjoyed people. He never met a stranger and always wanted to see others smile. Mr. Owens worked several years for the Columbus Fire Department, was a machinist and ran a small engine repair business. Other than his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Hall and an infant brother.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Diane Owens; children, Chris Owens (Maria) of Chesapeake, VA and Susan Neel (Chris Rolison) of Hamilton, GA; siblings, Fred Owens (Shirley) of Minnesota, David Owens of Columbus, GA and Betty Ann Redmond (Bobby) of Columbus, GA; grandchildren, Ashleigh Owens-Korbich (Tristan), Joseph Owens, Jeffrey Neel and Zoe Owens; great-grandchildren, Jaden and Nolan; many nieces, nephews and other extended family and many caring friends.
