Midland, Georgia- George Shoemaker, age 95, of Midland, Georgia, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will be held at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Monday, July 7, 2014, 3:00p.m. with Dr. Richard M. Wright officiating. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service at 2:00 p.m.
Mr. Shoemaker was born on December 27, 1918 in Upatoi, Georgia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from the U.S. Soil Conservation Service after 26 years. Mr. Shoemaker loved the outdoors, vegetable gardening, and being with his family.
George Shoemaker was a member of the Upatoi United Methodist Church for 78 years and faithfully served on numerous committees, taught Sunday School, and was a Church Lay Leader. He was known for his quiet service to others.
Mr. Shoemaker was preceded in death by his parents, George Henry Shoemaker, Sr and Permelia Aderhold Shoemaker; two brothers, Alver Shoemaker and Roland Schumacher; two sisters, Hazel Shoemaker White and Lucy Shoemaker Allen. George was a loving husband to surviving wife, Edna Shoemaker of Midland, Georgia; a devoted father to four children; one son, Steven Shoemaker (wife Jennifer) of Midland; three daughters, Laura Shoemaker Mitchell (husband Dennis) of Midland, Sharon Shoemaker Mos of Upatoi, Georgia, and Donna Shoemaker Tilton (husband Todd) of Columbus; a wonderful "Grandpapa" to four grandchildren, Rhys Mitchell, Drew Mitchell, Adrianna Mos, and Megan Shoemaker; one nephew, Donnie Allen; one niece, Gail Allen Patton (husband George); many other relatives and friends.
