Columbus, GA- Mr. John Samuel Gilmer (Staff Sergeant Retired) of Columbus passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at his home at the age of 89.
Born in Greensboro, NC on March 14, 1925, Mr. Gilmer was the only child born to the union of the late John H. and Anna Smith Gilmer. Mr. Gilmer took an early graduation from Dudley High School in Greensboro, NC to enlist in the U. S. Navy Corp to participate in the forming of the first African American Naval Band (B-1 Navy Band) under the directing of Mr. James Parson. After the war he attended North Carolina A & T, majoring in Music. He later joined the U.S. Army retiring after 21 years of dedicated service. During his Army career he served with the Triple Nickel "555" Paratroopers Unit. After retiring, he worked with the U. S. Postal Service and was the restaurant manager at Trailway Bus Line. A member of St. Benedict of the Moor Catholic Church, Mr. Gilmer served with the Men's Club, Choir and was on the Finance Team. He was also a Modern Free Mason.
Surviving his departure with cherished memories, include: his wife of over 50 years, Mrs. Uretha Williams Gilmer; four daughters, Brenda Martin, Jeanetta Dixon, Venatia Jones and LaFini Mosby; six grandchildren, Michael White (Maggie), Angelette Martin, Patrick Pearson, Johnetta Gossett (Marchell ), David Jones and E. Danielle Mosby; five great grandchildren, Quinton Simmons, Jr. and DaViria Pearson Williams; Michael White, Jr., Matthew White and Marayna White, two devoted sisters-in-law, Naomi Neeley and Ruth Williams, a host of other relatives, and friends.
The requiem funerary mass for Mr. Gilmer will be Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church. The interment will follow with full military honors in The National Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, AL. Father Brian R. LaBurt will officiate. Visitation is Monday beginning at 2:00 pm with a Rosary Ceremony at 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Arrangements entrusted to the staff of Progressive Funeral Home, Inc.
