Fernando "Nandy" Barsanti of Antrim passed away peacefully on July 30, 2013 with a great number of his family members, including his 89-year-old brother, Tino, surrounding him in love, telling stories and singing his favorite tunes. He was born on Feb. 1, 1927 to Umberto Barsanti and Daisy Steer and grew up in Wakefield, MA where he excelled at every sport he played including hockey, football and golf. He served in the Navy in WW II and attended Brewster Academy Prep School when he returned home where he captained both his hockey and football teams as he had done so in high school. He played football while attending Boston College and graduated in 1952. In Boston, he met Mary, the love of his life, and was married to Mary Louise Sullivan in 1950.
After designing aircraft for Boeing in Seattle, the family returned to the Boston suburbs where Nandy was employed as an engineering manager by Sylvania in Woburn. The company moved him to New Hampshire to build an electronics division in Hillsborough where he remained on the engineering management staff for many years and planned for the numerous additions to the plant. He retired at the age of 58 from GTE Sylvania's Manchester lighting division (now Osram Sylvania) where he spent many years as the Engineering Manager.
He proudly raised 6 children all of whom he taught to swim, downhill ski and put through college. He adored his grandchildren who he also taught to swim at his favorite places like Willard Pond and Nubanusit, and to ski at Crotched Mountain Ski Area. He was happiest being with his family and friends, eating good food and sharing a good bottle of wine. In his retirement years, he loved to golf, swim, grow vegetables in his garden, and downhill ski which he did till he was 85. He lived strong his entire life with a joyful spirit and a kind heart awaking every morning with a song on his lips. He loved to sing which he would happily do at family gatherings and for his Irish wife, so "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" was one of his favorites.
Everyone who knew Nandy loved him. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and family and the Antrim community where he lived for 55 years. He is survived by his wife, Mary, his children, Jeff, Shelley Barsanti Cohen, Laurie Barsanti Greenlees, and David; his grandchildren, Ellia, Adam and Maayan Cohen, Gabriel Barsanti, Courtney Barsanti, Brian Greenlees and Justin Losier; his in-law children, Hal Cohen, Jack Greenlees, Dana Brownrigg and Linda Barsanti; his brother Tino and his wife, Eleanor, and his sister Margherita Flaherty and her husband Coley. He was predeceased by his two sons, Brian and Kirk.
A funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 at St. Mary's Church, 38 Church St., Hillsborough, NH. A memorial gathering and refreshments will follow in the church hall. Please bring stories of Nando to share.
