Paul VanderWende IV, 57, of Antrim, NH, died at Concord Hospital, Concord, NH on March 22, 2013 after several months of treatment for cancer.
Paul was born in New Haven, CT on July 3, 1955 the son of Paul VanderWende III and Lorraine Louise (Lacy) VanderWende. Paul spent his childhood in Newtown, CT and graduated from Newtown High School in 1974. Paul and his wife Sarah (Bateman) were married September 23, 2000 they lived since 1997 in the home they built in Antrim, NH.
Paul worked for the Connecticut Department of Transportation for 25 years. He was a Licensed NH Fishing Guide, a certificated Private Pilot and authored two books: "The Field Guide to New Hampshire Trout Ponds", and "The Field Guide to New Hampshire Trout Streams." He enjoyed fishing, canoeing, hiking and flying. During his cancer journey Paul conceived of a program to bring survivors together for one-on-one fishing experiences; similar outings were planned for caregivers. He called the program Cast Away Cancer and asked that it be continued after his death.
Paul is survived by his loving wife Sarah VanderWende of Antrim, NH and his step-son L. David Bateman and his wife Shawna of Concord, NH. He is also survived by his mother Lorraine VanderWende of Newtown, CT and his brother James VanderWende and his wife Shelley of Woodstock, VT. Paul will be missed by his two grandsons Jonathan and Charlie Bateman, his nephew 1st Lt. James P. VanderWende and his niece Rochelle Wilson as well as aunts, uncles and cousins. He is predeceased by his father Paul VanderWende III.
Visiting hours will be held at Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street, Peterborough, NH, on Friday April 5, 2013, from 5PM until 7PM. A funeral service will be held at the Antrim First Presbyterian Church, 73 Main Street, Antrim, NH on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 2PM, Reverend Peter Howe will officiate.
