GREENFIELD - J. Robert (Bob) Plourde, 76, of Greenfield, died after a courageous battle with lung disease on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, surrounded by his loving family and the caring staff of Monadnock Community Hospital.
Bob was born in Manchester on January 2, 1937 to Joseph L. Plourde and Irene E. (Boisvert) Plourde and grew up in Lowell, MA, where French was his first language as a child. He went on to graduate with a degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University after which he worked in the budding semiconductor industry. He married Elaine C. Giroux in 1960, at which point they started a family, raising three wonderful children together. He was a good father, a dedicated husband and a loving caregiver during Elaine's long battle with ALS, which took her from him, and their children, in 1980.
Bob was a voracious learner and intensely curious about many topics. His hobbies were numerous, including beekeeping, astronomy, maple sugaring, HAM radio, computer programming, geology and firearms. Bob believed one should never pass up the opportunity to learn something new, or to teach something to someone else. In more recent years Bob was very active in the local community. Among his many involvements, he worked on the maintenance staff at Tory Pines Resort, served as a trustee in Greenfield and belonged to the Pinnacle Mountain Rod and Gun Club in Lyndenborough.
Bob is survived by his mother, Irene E. Plourde of Lowell, MA, two sons, Marc J. Plourde of Winthrop, MA, and his husband Chris Shorrock, and David R. Plourde of Greenfield, a daughter, Lisa A. Snyder and her husband, Craig, of Fleming Island, FL, and his close friend and companion Patricia Russell of Greenfield. He also will be missed by his six grandchildren: Bethany, Kalin, Jesse, Deona, Tosha and John as well as his great-grandchild Nova. Additionally, he leaves his dear sister Lillian A. Welcome and her husband, Robert H. Welcome, of Rockport, MA.
