FLORIDA - Deborah Jessop Whitcomb, 74, formerly of Peterborough, died peacefully in her sleep on August 16, 2013, at her home in The Villages, FL.

Mrs. Whitcomb was born September 17, 1938 in Peterborough, just as The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 bore down on the region. The daughter of Lionel and Alwilda Jessop of Nashua and Hancock, she was a graduate of Nashua High School, Westbrook College and Boston University.

A 35-year resident of Peterborough, Mrs. Whitcomb owned and operated Whitcomb Fire and Safety with her husband, Roger. She also worked as Director of Volunteer Services for Monadnock Community Hospital before retiring to Florida. Prior to her employment with MCH, she served as a volunteer herself and was a member of the Board of Trustees at the hospital.

Though she had many wonderful friends in Florida, Mrs. Whitcomb always called the Monadnock Region home. She was a member of the Unitarian Church, volunteered in local schools and was a Girl Scout Leader. She also loved spending time with family and friends on Thorndike Pond in Jaffrey. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her enjoyment of crossword puzzles, word games and bridge games, and her love of family, community and friends.

Survivors include her three children, Jeffrey Whitcomb of Keene, Merideth Cutler of Lakewood, CO, and Scott Whitcomb of Duxbury, MA; her sisters, Pamela Miley of Grand Rapids, MI, Susan Jessop of Swanzey, and Penelope Chittim of Sabattus, ME; five grandchildren; a niece and three nephews. Her husband of 46 years, Roger Whitcomb, died earlier.

A private family memorial service will be held this fall in the Monadnock Region. The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Mrs. Whitcomb's name to the American Cancer Society.
