Dorothy Joan Keane died peacefully at age 69 in the dementia unit at Summercrestin Newport, NH on March 7, 2013. She formerly lived in Rindge, NH. Joan was born on June 18, 1943 in Chattanooga, TN, grew up in Cleveland, OH and graduated from Kent State University in 1965. She moved to New England in 1967 because of her interest in winter sports. Joan got a Masters' degree from Fitchburg State University and taught in the public schools in Winchendon, MA for many years. She taught 6th grade as well as special education and science. She loved biology and vernal pools. Joan befriended many students and was well loved by all who knew her.

Joan loved animals and had many cats and dogs over the years. Her interests included gardening, knitting and crocheting, and collecting antiques. Antique furniture and glassware adorned her home. She belonged to the Nellie Perkins Doll Club and had an extensive collection of antique dolls whose authenticity she carefully researched. Joan had a real interest in the history in and around Rindge and was a very active volunteer at the Rindge Historical Society. Joan loved her flower gardens, combined this love with her historical interests and helped to restore the old perennial gardens at the Rindge Historical Society in addition to leading tours there.
Joan was very kind to her neighbors. She adopted a senior citizen in Rindge and took her to doctor's appointments for many years.Joan was diagnosed with Fronto-Temporal Dementia in 2007 and faced her condition with determination and courage. She lived at Summerhill in Peterborough, NH and subsequently at Summercrest in Newport, NH where her caregivers provided safe, tender and loving care.
Joan was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Grace (Cantrell) Keane. She is survived by her brother Joseph, her niece Cindy, by many cousins including Martha Robb and her family as well as by close friends. A private service is planned. In Joan's memory, be kind to someone in need.
