PETERBOROUGH - James E. Weafer, 87, of Peterborough, died suddenly at Monadnock Community Hospital on Tuesday, October 1, 2013.

James was born on October 15, 1925, in Newark, NJ, the son of Thomas Weafer and Mary (Kelly) Weafer.

He moved from Newark to Belleville, NJ, before moving to Peterborough, where he lived with his loving wife, Irene (Davis) for the last 16 years.

James served in the United States Navy, active duty in the Atlantic, during World War II. After serving his country, James worked for the Public Service of New Jersey for 38 years as a control operator. He was an active member of the VFW, The American Legion post #5 and the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association. James' greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren.

James is survived by his wife, Irene, with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage on September 12, 2013. He is also survived by his son James A. Weafer and his wife, Leslie, of San Diego, CA; his three daughters, Barbara Weafer and her husband, Dave, of Marlborough; Carol Barrett and her husband, Dan, of Norwell, MA; Patricia Dipietro and her husband, Don, of Rutland, MA; his grandchildren Ryan and Sean Weafer, Scott and Alex McGrath, Lilian and Alison Barrett and Dave, Michael and Julia Dipietro. James is also survived by his sister Mae Weafer of New Jersey and his brother and sister-in-law Charles and Teresa Sutter of Colorado, as well as many nieces and nephews.

James is predeceased by his infant daughter Teresa.

A visiting hour will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street, Peterborough, followed by a memorial mass which will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Divine Mercy Parish, 18 Vine Street, Peterborough. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, Sand Hill Road, Peterborough. Reverend Monsignor Daniel Lamothe will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in James' name to the American Heart Association at www.heart.gov.
