John Raymond French of Bennington, NH, died on August 11, 2013 at his home after a brief illness. John was born on March 11, 1948 in Peterborough, NH, the son of Edward French and Addie (Stinson) French.

John was a lifelong resident of Bennington. He graduated from Hillsborough-Deering High School in 1966 and immediately entered the United States Air Force. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam before his honorable discharge in 1970.
John served his community with pride. In addition to being the Fire Chief in Bennington for a number of years, he served as the Water/Sewer Commissioner and as the Civil Defense Director. He umpired for the Crotched Mountain Little League Program, served on the Board of Directors for the Fire Mutual Aid Dispatch System, and was a member of the VFW and American Legion.
John was an avid New England sports fan and enjoyed camping, playing cribbage and golf. He was very proud of his family and his greatest title was that of Grandfather.
John is survived by his wife of 35 years, Denise (Cooley) French, his children Brian French and his wife, Marie, of Mammoth Lakes, CA, Brandon French of Bennington, Brett French and his wife, Jaime, of Milford, and Kristie LaPlante of Bennington. He will be dearly missed by his four grandchildren: Lindsay and Chelsea LaPlante and Ashley and Hailey French. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Bennett and her husband, Norman, of Owls Head, ME.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday, August 13 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street, Peterborough, NH. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Bennington at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 14, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the Bennington Congregational Church, Francestown Road, Bennington, NH.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to The Bennington Congregational Church, C/O Sandy Cleary, PO Box 19, Bennington, NH 03442 or Capital Area Emergency Veterinary Service (CAVES), 1 Intervale Road, Concord, NH 03301. Funds donated to CAVES will go toward providing free veterinary care to law enforcement and service dogs.
