Samuel Stratton Obituary

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - Samuel Nelson Stratton, formerly of Basking Ridge, NJ, and Naples, died peacefully on Aug. 13, 2014 in Bonita Springs, Fla. two weeks shy of his 88 birthday.

He was a dear and loyal friend to many throughout his life; father, grandfather and respected educator of life lessons amongst his peers and family.

Sam was born Aug. 27, 1926 to Charles Lyman Stratton and Jennie (Nelson) Stratton in Jaffrey. He graduated from Conant High School in Jaffrey in 1945 and served as an airplane engine mechanic in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He is a 1952 graduate of The University of New Hampshire and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Sam was a successful chemical sales engineer for the Getty Oil Company, his career taking him from New England to New Jersey to Dublin, Ohio. He retired from Getty Oil in 1984 and settled in Naples, Fla. He was an avid golfer and shot his age multiple times. Sam was an active member of the Congdon-Overlook Masonic Lodge #163 in Bernardsville, N.J. Sam sustained lifetime friendships with high school basketball teammates, military service mates, college fraternity brothers, and many golfing buddies. He always relished a good golf match or a card game. He strove to increase his life skills and to pass on what he learned to his children as well. He believed we could grow and learn at any age.

Sam is survived by his wife, Anna Kerstner of Bonita Springs, Fla., his five children: Linda Stratton (m. Dr. Wes Ward) of Oro Valley, Ariz.; Sarah Pihl (m. Bengt) of Berlin, Germany; Kim Stratton (m. Greg Wire) of San Clemente, Calif.; Sam Stratton of Washington, N.J.; and Nancy Stratton of Temecula, Calif. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and his former wife, Barbara Stratton of Centerville, Mass.

He is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Joan Stratton Bento, and brothers Robert and Donald Stratton.

Sam Stratton will be placed to rest at Conant Cemetery, Stratton Road, Jaffrey, New Hampshire. A private memorial service will be held.

I remember when I was little we were all at Lake Sunshine, uncle Sam was on the raft and he saw me struggling to reach the raft, so he jumped in the water and swam over to me and taught me how to swim. He always wanted people to do their best, and he was happy to help. He also liked to barbeque, and I will always remember his laugh. My condolences to my cousins Linda, Sarah, Kim, Sam and Nancy The last time I saw him it was in Jaffrey in the late ninety's he was getting the Stratton house ready to sell, and he was sitting at the kitchen table teaching himself German, R.I.P.uncle Sam .With love your niece Lisa

A great guy, I knew him when he lived in Basking Ridge in a very nice two story colonial off of Lake Road. His son Sam is also a great person, who I know for over thirty years.
